One Book, Many Cultures
The Year of the Rat
May 12 was an exciting night at the Home of the Hawks. Russian cartoons and music playing, a discussion about kite flying in Pakistan, a Mariachi band performing in the hallways, families decorating quilt squares for our Nathan Hale Community Quilt, all of this and more happened from 6 - 7:30 p.m.This was the culminating activity for our One School, One Book project, and an evening of appreciation of some of the different cultures in our world. Our quilt is being sewn by Ms. Vicchitto and Ms. Miner, and will soon be displayed.
Author Visit with Elisa Carbone
|
April 3rd was the big day. Our 4th graders welcomed her with flowers and an acrostic poem using the letters of her name. She presented to all the grades. A small group of 3rd and 4th graders met with her to focus on their writing. She ate lunch with the 5th grade students, parents and staff in the Devouring Books Discussion Group. She discussed her book Blood on the River, one of our Connecticut Nutmeg Nominees for 2009. (Below are 5th graders preparing for our Elisa Carbone's visit.)

| Verplanck School ready and waiting for our student contestants. While this photo was being taken, pizza was being delivered, nametags were being made, and the microphone was being plugged in. |
Many students submitted tee shirt designs! Although only one was chosen to be on the shirt, the others were displayed during the Nutmeg at Night evening. |
Steve Hadge,Robertson School Media Specialist and Mona Elbert, Mary Cheney children's librarian, holding up the winning tee shirt design. Every contestant received a shirt! |
Because we received grants from the Townwide PTA and the Manchester Foundation, we were able to purchase copies of the Nutmeg Nominees for 2010. |
The contestants have already competed and they are carefully deciding which book to choose to take home and read for next year's Nutmeg contest. |
As you can see from the scoreboard, many students knew the answers to the questions. |
